LAST DEBRIEFING OF THE SEMESTER!

I can't believe classes are over. :( It feels like I just moved into my dorm and I'm already halfway through my first year here at Allegheny. Time really flew by. It felt really weird waking up this morning and not getting ready to go to FS. In fact I would be sitting in FS right now. I really enjoyed the last few days of classes. I think all of the episodes were really well done and it was an excellent way to wrap up the semester. I think there were so many interesting segments and I think it was really interesting that we all decided to focus on Allegheny College in ours. That was really cool because we were able to relate a national television show to our very own campus. That is the true essence of Sunday Morning, relating things to your own life.
The blog awards was a really cool idea and although I didn't win them (i'm not surprised since I kind of sucked at blogging), I think the people that won really deserved them. I hope that all of us, or most of us, will keep up with are blogs a little for the remainder of the year. I'll try to check the blog platform sometimes and post anything interesting going on. I like how I feel connected to everyone through our blogs and I know i'm going to miss everyone from FS so this is something that can keep us in contact throughout the next semester.
Best of luck to everyone next semester! Hopefully I'll be seeing all of you soon!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays as well!

Debriefing

I can't believe the semester is almost over! Doing this debriefing is really making me think about how fast this sememster has gone and how many of these I have done without even thinking that one day I won't have to blog for FS anymore. I really enjoyed the meditation exercises we did in class on Thursday. I think it was the perfect way to spend our last real class time together. It was really relaxing and I really needed that this week. I never knew how stressful the end of this semester would be. I'm looking forward to see everyone's episode's coming up in the next few classes. I think they will be a great way to wrap up the semester and will allow us one last time to shine in FS. I also am really excited to see who wins all of the blog awards. I'm really going to miss our FS and everyone in it. I"m glad we still have a few classes left. Good Luck with your episodes everyone!

Debriefing for this week

I can't believe there are only 2 more days of classes before break! ... This week flew by. I remember sitting in my room on monday thinking "it's only monday" dreading the rest of the week to come. I'm a little sad that Sunday Morning is over for our FS. I was used to watching it and I loved being able to discuss all the storie in class. I think that show really brought our class together. It gave us so many topics to talk about and to debate on. Coming into this class I would never have thought a show could do that. I'm really going to miss watching Sunday Morning. It always opened my eyes to o many new things and to things I never even thought about. I hope that even with my busy college schedule I'll get up early on a sunday every now and then to watch it. I'm really glad Professor Knupsky introduced me to this show because before taking this FS I never even knew it existed.

Musing for 11/13

I love Mo Rocca and I was really excited to see that he had this week’s commentary. I like how he named the most popular costumes which were mainly heroes (which took me way back to the Kit Carson and the Western Heroes readings we did and the discussions we had in class about what really makes a hero.) I think its funny how there are always a few trendy costumes that seem to repeat themselves as the trick-or-treaters come to the door. It really caught my attention when he referred to Saw IV has “pornographically violent” because we had just discussed the violence in movies like this in class and how it’s weirdly entertaining but that it might also be contributing to our nation’s rate of violence. I never really thought of saw as pornographical though. Also, I thought it was perplexing that everyone knows about Halloween but very few people pay attention to the following day, All Saints Day. I personally never knew there were so many patron saints for so many different things. I think All Saints Day should be celebrated a little more since it seems like a lot of the saints had pretty amazing lives and should be honored. All Saints Day seems like it should be a little more important than Halloween.

this weeks debriefing!

So the stress of college life sure is getting to me now but it's the little things in life that are making things bearable. For example it's 12:10 am right now and I'm in the library with a mountain of work in front of me but I just went to McKinley's and they actually weren't out of chocolate milk! I love chocolate milk and McKinley's always seems to run out of it. I guess I'm not the only one on campus that likes it. But anyways, the thing is, no matter how stressed I get little things in my day keep me going. I'm not going to lie I dread going to FS sometimes (no offense Professor Knupsky) but lately it seems like that class is helping me cope with the rest of life right now. I love being able to just voice my opinion about things and that there really is no right or wrong answer in that class. The commentary assignment basically made me sick to my stomach because of my anxiety about public speaking but getting to hear everyone's opinions and ideas about so many diverse topics was pretty amazing today and last thursday. It was a really thought provoking assignment and I wish I had assignments like that in all my classes. Well it's back to work for me ... gotta love Allegheny!

Debriefing for this week!

So this week went by super fast for me and now that i think of it it was kind of a blur. Halloween came and went way too fast! This week was full of good conversations about prejudice and Jane Elliot. I would like to think that the talk on Saturday changed more life or atleast the way I look at life. I am so glad we had to attend this talk for class because I honestly don't think I would have gone on my own and I would be missing out on a realy good 3 hrs. I also, really enjoyed watching October Sky. It's one of my favorite movies and I think it is so enspiring. I guess this week was full of inspiration for me. It was one of those weeks were I took a step back and evaluated myself. I thought about not only how I was doing here at school but also just how I was doing as a human being. I questioned myself whether this is who I wanted to be. I'm glad I was forced to think about things because of FS this week. Although this week wasn't always good (due to reasons I won't list) I enjoyed it because it made me think.

Musing for 10/30

I absolutely loved Jane Elliot’s- The Anatomy of Prejudice talk. I walked away with so much information and so many thinks to think about. Although it would take me forever to list all of the things I liked about the talk my most favorite parts were the listening skills and the study she did with her class. The listening skills really made me think about whether or not I’m a good listener. Does anyone ever really sit completely still when listening? I would like to know how many people would consider themselves to be the perfect listener (they follow all of the rules). I have never met anyone who is capable of keeping quiet hands, feet and mouth the whole time someone is talking. I think Jane Elliot was a pioneer for doing the study she did. She was also brave and I think she should be admired. Do you think a similar study would be as controversial today as it was back then? I think a lot of parents would have a problem with their kids being treated like that and wouldn’t be very understanding.

Debriefing for this week (i remembered!)

I really enjoyed discussing ethics this week. I found it very interesting that there were so many rules and regulations in conducting a study. Now every time I hear about a study in our FS class or in my Cog. Psych. class I think about whether or not I would approve it if I was on the IRB. Hearing about different kinds of studies really made me realize that there is so much involved in conducting a study. I know see how morals and ethics really affect psychological advancement. Totally off topic... I'm so glad my podcast is finally over! It was a fun assignment but it stressed me out a little and I was super nervous because I hate performances like that. I hope everyone enjoyed ours though. It seemed like the class had enough to say about it so I guess it didn't bore you all too much! I'm really excited to go home for fall break. I think it'll be nice to get away from here for a little bit and relax. I'm going to miss all my new friends though. I hope everyone has a safe and happy break! See you all next Thursday.

Musing for the 9/30 episode of Sunday Morning

A segement that really caught my attention from this week was the one on Sputnik. Two quotes particularly stuck out during this segment. They were "The United States will never be caught napping that way again." and "We turned a negative into a positive, we won the space race. We made cell phones and GPS systems and the internet. And at the end of the day, there is no Soviet Union." I just thought the first quote was kind of amusing because the US was accused of napping while the Soviet Union was busy making satellites. I thought it was a very interesting choice of words and it made me laugh. The second quote really made me think. It seems as if Sputnik was motivation for the US to start doing something. It kind of opened our eyes and forced us to start taking action. I also thought this quote was very bold and even a little bit humorous. It's true that although we saw the Soviet Union as some huge threat and we even tried to be more like them so we could beat them, they ended up meeting their demise anyways. In the long run we did win, because we're still a country and we're inventing so many new things. I think it's a good thing that we weren't always first. When you always win everything you lose motivation to try your best. I think that Sputnik helped us bring our A game, so to speak and lead to many achievements on the US's part.

i can't believe i keep forgetting to do a debriefing. This was a rough week for me so it must have slipped my mind ... again. Is anyone really starting to feel the stress of school now? i thought i had it all under control but i think everything is just catching up with me and making me stressed! I must say that FS is may favorite class. It's definitely more relaxing than the rest of them. I feel like it's a friendlier environment. I hope I can get through this next week without forgetting to do anything. I've been working on my podcast with Julia and Will. It's a pretty interesting project. I just hope I"m doing it right!

Debriefing ... better late than never!

I can't believe I forgot to do a debriefing this week. I must say i'm glad this week is over. It wasn't a very good one for me. Stress is hitting me big time and on top of that I have a terrible cold. The highlight of my week was probably getting assigned the Into the Wild reading. This is one of my favorite books and I can't wait to see what the class has to say about it. I feel like a major focus this week was nature and the environment because of the bug segment and EO Wilson. I think that the Into the Wild reading will further our discussion about nature a little bit. I hope to go see Into the Wild at the movies soon, that is whenever I actually have time to get to the movies. I hope everyone will see it at some point. It would be awesome if we could go as a class but that seems doubtful considering all of our hectic college schedules!

Into the Wild!

Although I already read this book last year I was really excited that I was assigned to read it again. Chris McCandless's story is one I will never get sick of, and that is why i'm very excited to see the movie! After reading the book last year and hearing the reactions of the public I really started thinking ... could I ever do something like that with my life? And the answer is no. I'm still baffled by Chris's story and the ending of it brings me to tears every time I read it. He had his whole life ahead of him and could've done anything with it he wanted. However, it came to an end in an abandoned bus in the middle of nowhere. Is that really how he wanted his life to end? I wish I could have met Chris at some point on his journey and asked him what his major goal for this adventure was. What was he really trying to accomplish?

Debriefing for this week!

So this week went by SUPER fast. I thought we had some really good discussions tuesday and today. I think we should talk a little more about EO Wilson's dream next class. I found his ideas extremely interesting. I think maybe as a class we should think of something to do to help his cause. It would be cool to brainstorm some ideas and see if there is a little project we can do to help our planet. I think class is going really well and we're all getting a lot more comfortable and maybe something like this could let us get even closer. I'm actually looking forward to this weekends episode. I must say i like Sunday Morning more and more every week!

Musing for Sunday Morning (9/9/07)

Hey everyone! I must say I enjoyed this episode a lot more than last weeks. I think it might be because i'm more used to the show's setup now and because there seemed to be more interesting topics presented. A segment that caught my eye was the flip flop segment! I live in flip flops. Everyone makes fun of me because I'll wear them until there is snow on the ground. I thought it was an iteresting story to have on a national news show and I felt like I could really connect to it. I think it's amazing how flip flops have made it through centuries and are more popular than ever.

Debriefing for this week

I think this week went really well. I feel like I learned a lot more about everyone. I especially like today's discussion about our stories. I find the idea of stories very interesting. I thought it was good that we could relate our reading about Kuralt to our own personalize and even share some intimate information about ourselves. I also think it's amazing that we can connect what we saw in this weeks episode of Sunday Morning to so many different things whether it be the readings we did our even our own personal lives. I really like how this class's main focus is relating everything we do to something else. Sunday Morning starts the week with great topics for discussion and then we branch off of those topics with further discussions, it's like a chain of good discussions. :) ... so that's how I feel about this week. I learned that a simple little news story can fuel a whole weeks worth of discussions.
