Debriefing

Although a lot of the subjects discussed in class this week are very controversial, I felt that the class did a very good job of talking about the topics without becoming too overwhelmed with opinion. A lot of the real-life situations brought the the discussions really contributed, and made people look at different perspectives. The discussion that I enjoyed the most was the one that discussed sexism in our language. I never really noticed how sexist our language really is until reading the segment and having that discussion in class. Although I think it may be close to impossible to change, I feel that by just recognizing it is a step in itself.

Prof Knupsky:

I agree...the first step is making the unconscious, conscious...then, we can start taking steps to change the way we speak. Language is so flexible, dynamic, and creative, that dealing with this issue really should only reflect our committment to change. Granted, taking a word out of a language is virtually impossible...but words DO become archaic and fewer people will use these words if there social pressure to avoid them.
