Debriefing 11/16/07

the eleventh....
This week was the last Sunday Morning episode that we have to watch. kind of sad. also, Becky, Katie, Shannon, Niki and Emily shared their commentaries....

After this week, there will be no more blogs about Sunday Morning. I guess the main lesson I've learned from all the episodes would have to be that you should never give up, no matter how much adversity you face. Some of the people that were on the show faced some really hard choices in life, and all the successful ones were determined to have nothing stand in their way. below is a link to their site, where you can read up on the old episodes or see what's to come...

The reason this blog exists....

Beckey started us off with her commentary about an incident that happened in Mount Lebonon. It's sad and complicated, so I'll let you read about it by clicking the link below. But the commentary really made me think; by setting ourselves up for greatness, are we really just setting ourselves apart? can privilege cause arrogance and ethnocentrism?

Scary but true

Katie followed the sober mood with a story about drunk driving. It's an issue that's thankfully never affected me. but I'm definitely not going to start doing that after her moving speech. and surprisingly, I talked to my friends about it. we all agreed on not driving drunk.

Next, Shannon stirred up the class with her discussion about whether or not 'under God' should be kept in the pledge. I personally agree with Didem in that I believe that phrase and 'In God we trust' should be removed from our currency because of the separation of church and state. one of the agreements for keeping it was because it was been around for so long. but slavery was kept for awhile--it was still wrong. I am NOT comparing this to slavery, that was just an example.

Nikki then gave her speech, a commentary similar to mine about teen modeling. It's disgusting to know that little girls are being watched by 50 year old men. And I was horrified to learn that Nikki herself was in a contest where a mother beat her child for not performing to 'the best of her ability.' Talk about being in the belly of the beast!

Emily went last, sharing with us her distaste for the campus 'variety' of healthy choices. Later that day, I got a ham sub instead of the usual fried food at the grill. But she's completely right; there needs to be a change in the food we eat here. I kind of even miss the food from home. below is a link to where Allegheny students can take a survey to voice their opinions about the food. we need all the help we can get!

Prof Knupsky:

Great entry this week! I hope that everyone will keep Sunday Morning in the back of their minds as they continue on here at Allegheny...you can always watch some of the segments from their website (which you very kindly supplied).

I think the commentaries were very moving this week as well and I'm glad that a couple of them got you to actually take action.
