Debriefing 11/09/07

the tenth....
this week we discussed dreams, Anthony Hopkins, IQ vs. humor, and pumpkins. Julia, Alex, Kirsten, Didem, and Ryan all presented their commentaries....

Dreams are really complicated. Some think that they are just the random neuron firings that go on in the brain, others say they're ways to deal with stress, and others say that they're a social network that connects us all....I used to keep track of my dreams in a 'dream log,' but with college work and everything, I haven't kept up with it. I should though. I like thinking about dreams' meanings and how people come up with them...

Apparently, Anthony Hopkins is going to be in a new movie, called 'Slipstream.' It's really cool because he not only stars in it, but composed music, directed, and wrote some of it! you can view the review and movie stuff at the link below

Slipstream Review

Julia was the first to give her commentary about the death sentence. it was more about a specific case, but still was great to think about. I think that each one deserves attention before deciding to kill someone, but ultimately I am for the death penalty as a form of catharsis and revenge....

Didem was next with her speech about emergency contraception being available on campus. I didn't even know that is wasn't here before (not that it would concern me!). but condoms and birth control should defintely be available to college students, because college stundents will do things regardless of the consequences...

The debate regarding health care was presented by Kirsten. I don't really like thinking about this and social security, only because i know that by the time I am old enough to have social security, there won't be any left. both cases seem somewhat hopeless. Canada has free health care and they seem to be doing just fine! I don't know of a solution, but free health care would be nice....

Ryan gave his commentary next. He shared with us his view of how tv is rotting the brains of America. I whole-heartly agree! there are plenty of shows that I think are disgusting, including 'My super sweet sixteen,' 'the Bacholer,' 'Survivor,' 'Jackass,' and many more...

Alex was last, discussing how violent video games do not cause violence. I believe this to be true, but i also believe that it merely re-enforces pre-disposed aggressive natures in children. I think it's so sad how my 9 year old cousin plays 'Grand theft auto.' it's terrible...

Prof Knupsky:

Great reviews of class last week! I used to keep a dream log as well...I've always had very vivid, intense, story-like dreams. Sometimes, it takes me all day to shake off a dream and there are dreams I still remember from when I was a kid (mostly the really scary ones). I think I could probably write some frightening stories from my dreams if I had the time. I definitely think dreams are important, and I think that people can certainly tap into them as a way to see and think about the world without the "context" or "frame" that we put on it when we are conscious...in other words...I think we see the world from a completely different perspective in our dreams because we don't have the same inhibitions regarding HOW we should see the world or respond to it.
