Children's Books

The main function of children's books is usually thought
of as a form of entertainment. And at times, slightly beyond that, as a tool
to teach children a wide variety of information, from colors to animal names.
But picture books also serve several other functions as well. They expose
children to their anxieties, which in turn, provides them with a path to escape
their anxieties.
Most parents go out of their way to screen difficult and fearful aspects of
life from their children as a means of protection, with the intention to keep
their children innocent and fearless. Ironically, this is perhaps the least
effective way of protecting children, because when that difficult or fearful
instance arises, the child will be unprepared and not know how to cope with
that situation. Children's books reveal these anxieties, informing them of
their existence, but they also show them ways to confront these issues, which
is how these picture books relieve their anxieties by acting as an instructional
diagram.
