In 1895, Taiwan was taken over by the Japanese after they defeated
the Chinese in battle. In 1945, China won back Taiwan after World
War II ended in loss for the Japanese. Since this date, Taiwan
has not been independent. In recent years, however, there has
been a strong push for Taiwan's independence. Many Taiwanese have
been in favor of independence, while many Chinese, including the
Chinese government have been against it.
