Service

For the past few semesters, our sisters have been involved in many types of service. Our chapter offers regular opportunities, such as weekly visits to the Crawford County Animal Shelter, and biweekly trips to the Meadville Soup Kitchen. In addition, sisters find time to volunteer on their own at the campus coffee shop, after school programs, and tutoring, just to name a few.

Kappa Alpha Theta's national philanthropy is CASA, which stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates. This group is made up of trained volunteers appointed to speak for abused and neglected children in court. CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to do research on the child's background and help the court make decisions about the child's future, giving children better chances of finding permanent homes and reducing their time spent in court or foster homes.
Theta Twister is our annual event to raise money for CASA. Teams of students compete in a Twister Tournament and the winning teams receive prizes donated from local businesses. All of the profits, which come from the registration fees, are donated to CASA.

During April, which is Child Abuse Awareness Month, our chapter held a 50/50 raffle, selling tickets to sisters, students and faculty members. The money we raised was used to purchase duffle bags for children represented by CASA. Mu's sisters are also involved in other large service events. One day each fall, Allegheny College students and Meadville residents come together to make a difference in the community. Teams are assigned various projects, from yard work and painting to visiting nursing homes. About half of our sisters signed up to participate this year. For the past two years, our sisters have participated in Relay for Life, sponsored by the American Cancer Society. During this 12 hour event, teams raise money and take turns walking laps, with at least one member of each team walking at a time. The money raised benefits American Cancer Society research and programs.

Last semester, our chapter completed over 250 hours of service and this semester we are looking to do even more!
