Educational Resources

For Teachers | For Forest Landowners

Education is a vital part of spreading awareness and information relating to forest conservation, resource management, wildlife habitat and forest policy. This page serves as a link for both teachers and woodland owners. Together you can teach Pennsylvania's youth that forests are precious and sustainable management is the only way to ensure enjoyment from forests in the future.

Educational Resources for Teachers

The Sustainable Teachers Resource Center provides educators with information pertaining to sustainable forestry, natural resources, water and wildlife. Lesson plans are provided and are regionally and age appropriate for Pennsylvania's youth.

The Conservation Education page, produced by the USDA Forest Service, seeks to connect people to the land by providing them with the tools they need to take informed actions related to sustaining natural and cultural resources. Educational curriculum for teachers and links for students are provided.

Teaching Youth About Forest Stewardship is an 8 page publication produced by the Penn State that covers all the basics pertaining to forest stewardship. This document presents the topic of forest stewardship and how to it.

Tree Identification information is provided at this site. A clickable map allows students to select an area of North America and native tree species are revealed.

Forest Resources for Kids is a resources produced by American Forests. Educational materials including lesson plans, coloring sheets, and interactive projects are available for prek-6th grade students.

Second Nature: Education For Sustainability works with colleges and universities to integrate sustainability as a core component of education and practice.

Environmental Inquiry, supported by Cornell University, promotes authentic scientific research for high school students. A variety of resources are available at this site.

Kids 'Ask a Forester' Page is an internet tool that allows students to ask foresters questions pertaining to forestry issues. Links to children-specific forestry sites are also included.

Education for Woodland Owners

The Penn State Natural Resources Extension helps people make informed decisions that improve their own well-being and ensure clean water, viable populations of native wildlife, recreational opportunities, attractive communities, and the sustainable production of wood and paper products.

The Pennsylvania Woodlands Timber Market Report gives prices paid in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for standing timber (stumpage) and for logs delivered to sawmills during the current quarter of the current year as well as past years.

The Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry, supported by the Department of Natural Resources, seeks to ensure the long-term health, viability and productivity of the Commonwealth's forests and to conserve native wild plants.

The Pennsylvania Forestry Association is a broad-based citizens group providing sound forest management advice to its members and promoting wise stewardship of all forest resources for the citizens of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

A Forest Landowners Guide to Internet Resources provides pamphlets, fact sheets, brochures and a variety of resources by state. A great starting point for inquisitive forest landowners.

Penn State University School of Forest Resources has undergraduate and graduate programs in forestry sciences as well as information about educational programs and workshops.

The National Woodland Owners Association is a comprehensive website that includes information about forestry issues, conservation, certification as well as links to state affiliates and a variety of links.
