"Leadership
and learning are indispensible to each other."
John F. Kennedy
Welcome to Allegheny College's webpage for Lambda Sigma. Every year,
50 freshman students are selected to be members of the Epsilon Chapter
during their sophomore year. The selection is based on the four principles
of Lambda Sigma: Leadership, Scholarship, Fellowship, and Service.
It has been an active year for the Epsilon Chapter as we carry on our
chapter's traditions and hold the torches of Leadership, Scholarship,
Fellowship, and Service.
We started the fall semester off with service to our college. Allegheny's
Lambda Sigma members arrived on campus a week early to welcome the freshman.
On August 24th and 25th, for eight hours, members greeted new students,
unloaded their cars, and carried all their belongings to their door. This
service was greatly appreciated by the students and especially their families
during this time of transition.
During Freshman Orientation week, we hosted the annual Lambda Sigma dance
in Brooks Dining Hall. All freshmen were invited to enjoy the live DJ,
dancing, and refreshments. Throughout the orientation Lambda Sigma members
were highly visible in their custom gold shirts, helping to give directions
and assist new Allegheny students and families.
During fall semester, our members were required to fulfill 5 hours of
service on top of participating in Make a Difference Day. Our first big
project was on October 18th when we participated in Make a Difference
Day. On this county-wide volunteering holiday, almost all members participated
with a campus organization. A team represented Lambda Sigma, and spent
the day raking leaves and washing windows for a few senior citizens in
the neighborhood.
The Epsilon chapter is looking forward to many other service projects.
In the spring, all members will be participating in Up Till Dawn, a large
fundraising extravaganza for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
Several members are regular volunteers at Hog Heaven Animal Rescue Farm,
a shelter for abused and neglected hoofed animals. Some members volunteer
as chemistry and math tutors for fellow students and for the youth of
Meadville. In addition to these projects, our chapter members are always
willing to help out whenever and wherever needed.
As we move toward the time when next year's members are selected, we anticipate
more opportunities to develop as leaders both academically and civically.
As J.F.K. once said, "Leadership and learning are indispensable to
each other." Best wishes for success to all other chapters of Lambda
Sigma.
