Russia and Central
Europe
A multi-disciplinary examination of this changing region and the dynamics
affecting it. Issues of ethnicity/nationalism, religion/culture, and
the interrelation of politics and economics receive emphasis. Particular
attention is given to the rise and decline of Communist regimes and
the struggle to create stable, democratic, free-market systems in their
aftermath. The minor requires 20 credits. The minor coordinator is Professor
Kenneth Pinnow.
Course Requirements
for the Russia and Central Europe Minor:
Take at least five of the following courses, with at least one at
the 300 level or above
- History 218 History of Imperial Russia, 1682-1917
- History 219 The Soviet Century, 1917-Present
- Political Science 247 Transitions to Democracy
- Political Science 356 Government and Politics of the Soviet Union
and its Successor States
- Political Science 423 Russia in World Politics
- Political Science 433 European Security and NATO
- Russian 225
- Electives in the form of seminars or advanced topics courses offered
by various departments from year to year (e.g. Economics 587 Transformation
from Centrally-Planned to Market Economies; History 558 Revolutionary
Russia, 1900-1921) with the approval of the Coordinator of the minor
and the department offering the course.
