Medieval and Renaissance Studies

An examination of the history, religion, art, and literature of the medieval and Renaissance period intended to foster a sympathetic understanding of an age very different from our own, as well as a better sense of the roots of the modem era. The minor requires 20 credits of course work. The minor coordinator is Professor Glenn Holland, and the minor is administered by a committee whose membership includes Professors Amelia Carr, Holland, and Eric Palmer.

Course Requirements for the Medieval and Renaissance Studies Minor:

  • Take at least three of the following courses, including courses in at least two different departments

    • Art 215 Art of the Middle Ages
    • Art 225 Art of the Italian Renaissance
    • Art 231 Art of the Northern Renaissance
    • English 210 British Literature I
    • English 270 Shakespeare
    • History 020 Ideas and Institutions of Medieval and Early Modem Europe, 476-1789
    • History 222 History of Medieval and Early Modem France, 800-1789
    • History 226 History of Medieval and Early Modem England, 1066-1688
    • Music 130 Music of the Renaissance
    • Philosophy 230 History of Science
    • Religious Studies 250 History of Christianity II: The Age of Faith

  • Take at least two of the following

    • Art 330 The Renaissance Woman
    • English 415 Literature of the Middle Ages
    • English 416 Chaucer English 425
    • Renaissance Literature and Society
    • English 426 Topics in Shakespeare
    • History 302 The Italian Renaissance
    • History 304 The Age of the Reformation

    Appropriate special courses may be included in the minor with the permission of the minor coordinator.
