Medieval and Renaissance Studies
An examination of the history, religion, art, and literature of the
medieval and Renaissance period intended to foster a sympathetic understanding
of an age very different from our own, as well as a better sense of
the roots of the modem era. The minor requires 20 credits of course
work. The minor coordinator is Professor
Glenn Holland, and the minor is administered by a committee whose
membership includes Professors Amelia Carr, Holland, and Eric Palmer.
Course Requirements
for the Medieval and Renaissance Studies Minor:
- Take at least three of the following courses, including courses
in at least two different departments
- Art 215 Art of the Middle Ages
- Art 225 Art of the Italian Renaissance
- Art 231 Art of the Northern Renaissance
- English 210 British Literature I
- English 270 Shakespeare
- History 020 Ideas and Institutions of Medieval and Early Modem
Europe, 476-1789
- History 222 History of Medieval and Early Modem France, 800-1789
- History 226 History of Medieval and Early Modem England, 1066-1688
- Music 130 Music of the Renaissance
- Philosophy 230 History of Science
- Religious Studies 250 History of Christianity II: The Age of
Faith
- Take at least two of the following
- Art 330 The Renaissance Woman
- English 415 Literature of the Middle Ages
- English 416 Chaucer English 425
- Renaissance Literature and Society
- English 426 Topics in Shakespeare
- History 302 The Italian Renaissance
- History 304 The Age of the Reformation
Appropriate special courses may be included in the minor with the
permission of the minor coordinator.
