American Studies
An interdisciplinary anaylsis of American culture requiring courses
in history, literature, and theory, as well as the synthesis course
LS 320 "Science and the Transformation of American Life." Additional
courses for the minor are taken froma variety of fields. The minor requires
24 credits. Students must declare this minor no later than the end of
the first semester of their junior year, without exception. Because
this minor offers a wide array of options and possibilities, students
must specify which courses they will take both before and after LS 320
and produce a statement (1 to 2 pages) describing their plan of study,
to be handed into the administrator of the program when they declare
the minor. The coordinator for this minor is Professor
David Miller, and the minor is administered by a committee whose
membership includes Ben Slote and Laura Quinn.
Course requirements for American Studies:
- At least one course in American literature and one in American history,
paired in a way that the student can defend in his or her rationale.
- LS 320, "Science and the Transformation of American Culture," to
be taken in the sophomore or junior year.
- Two courses revelant to the United States from any one or more of
the following departments: Art, History, Economics, English (300,
400 or 500 levels only), History (300, 400 or 500 levels only), Political
Science or Religious Studies.
- A course offering a methodological and/or theoretical perspective--examples
include: "Communication Technology and Social Change (Comm Arts 280);
"Marxian Economics" (Econ 212); "Feminist Theory and Methods" (WS
200); "Literary Theory" (Eng 360).
Students should construct the minor in close consultation with the
coordinator of the program.
