Class Definitions of Sexuality
I would define the cultural construction of sexuality as the homophobic tendencies of our culture. The belief that heterosexuality is right and homosexuality is wrong. Our culture is afraid of what is different and therefore has structured itself to ostracize all those outside the accepted norms even though they fundamentally have the same rights as all citizens.
It seems like desire, and gender, and attachment is fairly deeply rooted in our brains and genes, yet how a society has interpreted those basic impulses has varied wildly throughout history. So the culture Construction of Sexuality is simply the de facto and de jure designations of what is or is not appropriate between the sheets.
I think a cultural construction of sexuality involves a particular people's attitudes, values, and beliefs regarding love, sex, and lifestyle. It determines what is deemed acceptable and unacceptable in the social, political, and sexual realm.
I would define the "cultural constructions of sexuality" in the USA by its historical background. I think that the puritans who first came to America have left a strong sentiment that sexuality must not be demonstrated.
The different aspect of our culture i.e. books, television, music, politics portray sexuality with a certain degree of approval or disapproval that creates a generalized perception of sexuality.
"The cultural construction of sexuality" to me, this means the result of the ay culture (a very mysterious thing in itself) has defined sexuality and why we adhere to these ideas for economic reason.
Cultural Constructions of Sexuality can be defined as the way a people or groups of people develop norms for sexuality-what is ok? What is too chaotic? It is one way people order their lives; it is interactive in that people's perceptions of sexuality is influenced by the media-and people also influence the media, creating and distributing sexuality. What is sexually acceptable and what isn't? These questions are answered with cultural artifacts that people create and consume.
Although its hard to pinpoint a specific construction of sexuality in the culture because culture is so different to each individual and often the gauge of a culture's values and stances is judged by the media, I can confidently say my experience in our culture (Meadville, Allegheny, PA, United States ) has been or growing tolerance for genders that have traditionally been excluded from view, i.e. transgender people, bisexuals, homosexuals, etc However, there is some room being allowed for the acknowledgement of people who don't fall into either category rather somewhere in between. This room does not always demonstrate itself as acceptance-but many times as hate or fear.
Cultural Constructions of Sexuality: I think the word culture is very important and looks past specific vies of sexuality to reveal a broader picture. Maybe how sexuality is viewed on a superficial, mainstream level.
