TDS vs. Total Alkalinity

French Creek Watershed

I collected data representing the amount of TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) and Total Alkalinity (amount of buffers in the water) in the French Creek watershed. The twenty-five pairs of data that I collected were obtained as a result of the French Creek Environmental Education Project in conjunction with Allegheny College. The samples are representative of French Creek from January 1996 to February 1997 at the following sites: Sherman, Seneca, Cambridge Springs, Saegertown, and Meadville. This data may not be representative because there were only twenty-five samples taken over the last year. Other factors that may also cause a representative error could be human error in the testing or weather patterns. There was, however, a positive correlation between the TDS and Total Alkalinity according to the data collected. The correlation, although positive, did not prove to be very strong because the E-value was so large. Also the standard error was big which means that the points deviated farther from the line of regression. Possibly if there had been more data pairs, the correlation would have been stronger.
