Holy Orders

Most members wore long woolen habits that indicated what order they belonged to by their color.  For example, members of the Benedictines wore black habits and members of the Cistercians wore undyed wool or white.  Clothing for members of the Holy Order were meant to be very simple but still provide some sort of comfort.  The long habits were without slits along the sides displaying their escape of intense labor.  An order of Franciscan nuns, The Poor Clare Sisters, had to petition the Pope to be allowed to wear woolen socks.  St. Benedict allowed monks to wear linen coifs in order to keep their heads warm.
