CEED is actively soliciting local companies involved in developing clean or alternative energy technologies for possible federal funding. Projects can be broad-based as long as they link to clean energy. Businesses and entrepreneurs interested in being included on a list for federal funding should contact us at ceed@allegheny.edu
RecycleMania, a national competition among colleges aimed at waste minimization, will run from January 18 through March 28. Allegheny’s EcoReps are leading the College’s team, which also includes Physical Plant, St. Moritz Building Services, CEED and Kelly Boulton ’02, Campus Sustainability Coordinator.
Campus goals focus on reducing unwanted bulk mail, implementing initiatives to limit printing in offices and labs, developing employee and student orientation programs to support waste minimization, and promoting the One Less Cup Campaign. Throughout the competition Allegheny will report recycling and trash data and then compare the data with other schools.
In 2007 RecycleMania wrapped up its college recycling contest with over 41,370,000 pounds of recyclables recovered from over 200 colleges and universities across the country. The total amount of recyclables and organic materials recovered during that competition prevented the release of 15,583 metric tons of carbon equivalent (MTCE).
In real world terms, that reduction in green house gases is equivalent to eliminating the impact caused in a year by 12,367 passenger cars, electric generation to power 7,335 households or the consumption of 6,507,707 gallons of gasoline.
Watch for upcoming RecycleMania events.
