| Aphra Behn was one of the earliest women to earn a living through the publisihing of her literary works. She was born in 1640 during a time of Civil unrest to a middle class family. In 1670, Behn's first play was performed in a live theatre. She is most notable for bringing female eroticism to the public realm. Although she has written a substantial number of pieces, The Rover is one of her most distinguished plays. Throughout the tale, Behn discusses the role of women in the world and, most importantly, their relationships both to and with men. Behn utilized the pen to express herself and in doing so empowered generations of females to come. |
