Women writers have played an important role in the feminist movement. Their struggles to become independent and have the same rights as men has taken generations of women working for this cause. Women writers have dated back to the 16th centuries and such women as Aphra Behn, Christine de Pizan, Jane Anger, Jane Austen and Katherine Philips have played an important role in showing women in a different light through their writing.

Jane Austen was one of the first women novelists to become successful and her novels are still read throughout the world for important messages about love and friendship.

Katherine Philips is best know for her works depicting the important friendship and love that grows between two women while reflecting the importance of openly expressiong ones feelings, an unpopular concept for women of the seventeenth century.
