      <title>Allegheny Service Network</title>
      <link>http://webpub.allegheny.edu/group/asn/weblog/</link>
      <description>Allegheny Serivce Network is a student-run umbrella organization focused on bringing service leaders together to meet real community needs. The organization seeks representatives from all groups on campus that are involved in service programs and events; all student groups doing service are encouraged to have a voice. ASN adds organization to the service movement by providing a place where students can ask for help with service projects and can bring up concerns. Allegheny Service Network is an organization who serves to unite people interested in service with service leaders, and service opportunities. Our goal is to create a unified network of individuals and groups that can together create a stronger community. </description>

         <title>Peace Coalition </title>
         <description>Overview: Above all else, we, the members of Allegheny College&apos;s Habitat for Humanity aim to adhere to the idea of being a good neighbor to the community of which we are a part. In doing so we will fulfill the three main functions of a Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter which includes educating the campus and community about housing issues, providing labor for work projects, and raising money for our local affiliate. In accomplishing these tasks we can help those in need in the surrounding areas and provide opportunities for students to work together with each other and members of the Meadville community in an educational and fun atmosphere.

         <title>Emerging Leaders Retreat</title>
         <description>The Collegiate Leadership Conference is a well-established leadership development experience for upperclass students. Recognizing the opportunity to capture students early in their careers at Allegheny, the Emerging Leaders Retreat was created in 1999. It has become a crucial piece of the leadership program and an excellent stepping-stone for first year students to get connected into the greater Allegheny community. The overnight retreat takes place at an off site location prior to the start of Spring Semester each January. Topics of discussion include exploring sense of self, introduction to leadership theories including the Servant Leadership and Social Change models of leadership, and skills development programs.

         <title>Service-Learning Challenge</title>
         <description>
Overview: The Service-Learning Challenge (SLC) is a student-led movement at Allegheny College that brings students and faculty together to work toward integrating service-learning into course throughout the various disciplines. Service-Learning combines community service and academic learning with equal emphasis, while meeting a real community need. Each component enhances the other for the increased benefit of all involved.

In 1999, two students had an idea to get every Allegheny student involved in service through the course of the year. They soon realized that this was not a feasible idea and decided to start an organization in which students would help professors implement service-learning into their courses.

SLC Student Service Leaders (SSLs) are paired with professors to help with the planning and implementation of service-learning. SSLs have extensive experience with the local community, and therefore have a good grasp on community needs. This allows the students to be placed at service-learning sites where their service and learning will be optimized. The professor, on the other hand, offers expertise for the academic learning that takes place, and also creates the learning objectives for the course. The collaboration between SSL and professor, therefore, is ideal because it allows for each to bring his/her expertise to the equation. In the spring semesters of 2002 and 2003, SSLs were part of a class in which they learned about service-learning while they worked with a professor.

Courses recently partnered with the SLC:

Taking it to the Streets (FS 102)
Public Policy (Political Science 582)
Health Care Policy &amp; Politics (Political Science 196)
The American Family Farm (FS 102)
Technical Writing (English 208)
Introduction to Women&apos;s Studies (Women&apos;s Studies 100)
Women&apos;s Spiritual Autobiographies (Religious Studies 191)
