Responsibilities
Post by Shane Downing
What do you think? Question of the day!
-What would you think about having a mandatory physical education course requirement?
Recap:
Today we talked about how we can realign the structure of what “applied liberal arts” means at Allegheny. We did some awesome brainstorming and came up with a list of initiatives. Tomorrow we will be sifting through some of these ideas and comparing them with the areas we have defined as “missed opportunities” on campus.

Normally my comments are more constructive... A mandatory phys ed requirement would make me want to drop dead. I know that several top tier liberal arts colleges still incorporate the idea, but come on. Tell me one advantage that is not already available through existing opportunities. And while I'm all for "nudging" individuals into activities that they might otherwise ignore but would have enjoyed, phys ed is a staple all the way through secondary education.

I would have to agree with the other comments. I love the idea that at Allegheny you do not have to be bothered with additional classes that you have no interest in taking. I think one of Allegheny's greatest qualities is that you can choose your path. Physical education is obviously not a bad thing in general, but I don't think it should be mandatory.

I would have to agree with the other comments. I love the idea that at Allegheny you are not required to take anything you are not interested in, in fact, I think it is one of Allegheny's greatest qualities. Exercise is great, but it shouldn't be mandatory.

Physical exercise is good, but college is supposed to prepare us for the real world. Encouraging exercise is a great idea, but by making it mandatory, people will not like it as much, high school students who hated gym (like me) would be less likely to come here, and it would not be preparing us for the real world.

I do not think a physical education requirement would be beneficial at all. There are plenty of physical education courses and intramural sports that students can get involved in on their own. There is no need to make a requirement for physical education..this would make college comparable to high school in this aspect. I also agree that if prospective students found out about this requirement, some may be less motivated to come to Allegheny.

heck no to physical education requirements. i like all the space i get in the gym when i go work out. no need to force the people who are content in their lethargy and sloth to take up my space in the gym.
