Unusual Combinations
Post by Francheska Vargas
What do you think? Question of the day…
-What value do you see or acquire, if any, from having to major in one division and minor in another?
Recap:
Today the “Unusual Combinations” committee reviewed the academic departments; we looked at department brochures, websites, their catalogue section and written learning outcomes. We examined how the “Unusual Combinations” brand, interdisciplinary collaborations and the curriculum and co-curriculum is integrated in these marketing and informative readings.

I think there is great value in majoring in one division and minoring in another, but I also see a great loss of potential for certain students. I'm currently a humanities major, which means I must minor in a natural science or a social science to complete my education requirements. For me this isn't a problem as it creates a very well rounded education, but it feels like an opportunity is lost for me. My entire life I have been into music and I would love nothing less than to have a music minor, but at this point in my education it is just not probable because of how the Major/Minor requirement is written. I personally feel that you SHOULD be able to major and minor in the same category, and that there should just be two distribution requirements - two classes for each of the other divisions.
I know that this requirement exists because of the "unusual combinations" adage that Allegheny loves, but it seems to me that we can have unusual combinations within a single division of study just as much as two different divisions. As I said before, I believe you should be able to minor in the same category with a dual distribution requirement. I know this would personally make my experience at Allegheny much more enjoyable. I would get to do what I love along with studying what I need to study to take the next step in my life.
Just my opinion. Have a lovely day!
