| The notorious Starbucks in the Forbidden City--controversial from the start, but apparently also very popular, as it is rather refreshing after hiking around the vast courtyards of the imperial compound. By my latest visit there in April 2007, even this signage had disappeared. | ![]() |

| Luckily for the caffeine-deprived, there are still numerous other Starbucks spots around Beijing, including this one in a prime spot at Houhai. The security guards are a common presence there--who knows what behavior might occur after said caffeine is consumed? |
