COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

The following courses are those which are offered by the Classical Studies faculty or affiliated departments and which are approved for credit in the program. They are organized by department. Links to the course catalogue in each department are provided, where more detailed descriptions may be found. Some courses have websites you may visit.

Notes: (1) = offered every year; (2) = offered every other year, on average; (3) = not in regular rotation.


Modern and Classical Languages (catalogue)

Latin 110: Introductory Latin. An introduction to the morphology, grammar and syntax of the Latin language. (1)

Latin 120: Introductory Latin II. Prerequisite: Latin 110 or a sufficient grade on a placement test. (1)

Latin 215: Intermediate Latin 1. Review of grammar and reading of a selection of elementary texts. Prerequisite: Latin 120 or permission of the instructor. (1)

Latin 315: Roman Poetry ( = Advanced Latin). This course may be repeated for credit. Topics change with every semester. (1)

Latin 590: Independent study in Latin (3)

All courses are 4 credits with the exception of 590-level classes, which are two-credit independent study courses.


History (catalogue)

History 260: Greek History. The history of Greek-speaking peoples from the Bronze Age (ca. 3000 BC) to the successors of Alexander the Great (d. 323 BC). (1)

History 262: Roman History. A comprehensive survey of ancient Roman political and social history based on the interpretation of primary sources from the foundation of the city through the dissolution of the Empire in the west. (1)

History 374: Orality and Literacy in Ancient Greece. An examination of speech and writing as media of communication in ancient Greece, from the time of Homer to the fourth century BC. (3)

History 490*: (2007) Making History: the Age of Augustus. A study of the transformation of Roman society and culture in the time of the emperor Augustus (63 BC--AD 14). (3)

History 490*: (2009) Living with War in the Ancient World. An exploration of the extent to which war and warfare permeated the lives of ancient Greeks and Romans. (3)

History 583: Class Struggle in Ancient Greece. An exploration of class conflict in ancient Greece from the time of Homer to the fourth century BC. The course considers the representation of the lower classes in archaeological and literary sources and the infuence of the lower classes on Greek politics and society. (3)

Art (catalogue)

Art 110: Survey of Western Art I. This course will trace the major developments in the history of Western art from the earliest times to the Renaissance period of the fifteenth century. (1)

Art 211: Art of the Ancient World. A survey of the art and architecture of the Mediterranean, Greece and Rome from ca. 1600 BC through ca. AD 315. (2)
