Classes

I teach a range of courses, from freshman to senior level. Some courses, such Introduction to Environmental Science, are highly interdisciplinary, while others, such as Forest Ecology and Management, are focused in a given area. In all courses, student involvement and activity are key components. Class assignments and laboratory assignments are interactive and exploratory.

Research & Professional Interests

My research and professional interests are quite broad. I conduct most of my research collaboratively with great colleagues at a variety of institutions, in a number of wonderful ecosystems. Our collaborative work in coordinating and integrating a variety of large-scale and long-term studies is enabling us to better understand the complex ways in which human disturbances (acid rain, global warming, forest harvesting) compare to the variety of natural disturbances (e.g. hurricanes, local windstorms) that constantly affect forests.

I am also involved in various efforts to promote environmental sustainability. I am a project director for the Allegheny College Center for Economic and Environmental Development. CEED engages in local and regional projects that demonstrate that economic and environmental decisions can work together to foster economic vitality and maintain ecosystem integrity. Work with CEED focuses mainly on forest and ecotourism issues

Professional Involvement

Over the years, I have been involved in a variety of professional efforts to promote natural resource conservation and environmental sustainability.

  • I work with the Pennsylvania Consortium for Interdisciplinary Environmental Policy (PCIEP). This organization, comprised of environmental policy makers and universities and college, is devoted to improving environmental policy and understanding through government and academic cooperation that encourages interdisciplinary analysis and discourse.
  • The Northwest Pennsylvania Woodland Association is an organization of forestland owners and others interested in sustainable use of forest resources in Crawford, Erie and Warren counties. NWPWA provides information, education and an exchange of ideas to its members and to the public about the methods and benefits of proper forest management.
