Bio 060:  Cancer -- Causes & Consequences

Description: An examination of the set of disorders collectively known as cancer and their medical and societal consequences.  Topics to be addressed include the series of events by which a cell can escape its normal constraints and take on cancerous properties, the advantages and limitations of current treatments, why numerous headline-generating breakthroughs have yet to translate into a cure, and the relative role of scientific, emotional, and economic considerations in influencing decisions about screening, treatment, medical coverage, and research funding priorities.  Laboratory work included.

Note: This course is designed primarily for non-majors.  It fulfills the NSD lab science requirement and is also suitable for students with a special minor in Health Studies.
