Ann's Home Page

Ann received a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul, Botany Department, and the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology, Cell Biology Group. Ann teaches Molecular Biology, Current topics in Gene Regulation, Introductory Biology, and a non-majors Biotechnology course.

Ann's general research interests are in the molecular and genetic basis of gene regulation and is currently conducting research on the cell and developmental specific expression of the von Willebrand Factor gene. This gene is specifically expressed in endothelial cells which comprise the vascular system. The protein product of this gene is one of the major players in the initial steps of wound healing and defects in the expression of this gene or in the protein product comprise the major cause of bleeding disorders world wide. Ann is currently doing research to elucidate the components required for the appropriate expression of the vWF gene in normal endothelial cells. Future research goals are to understand the difference between the chromosomal structure of the gene in expressing versus non-expressing tissue and to determine what cues are responsible for appropriate expression of this gene during development. Student researchers in her lab conduct studies to understand what role particular regions of the vWF gene play in the appropriate expression of this gene as well as defining sequences responsible for appropriate expression. Ann also has an interest in the ethics of the human genome project and in developing educational programs to educate the general public in the implications of genetic testing. While not teaching or doing research Ann enjoys gardening, bird watching, kayaking, rollerblading, singing (though she sometimes does this while doing research), and cross-stitching.
