My research interests lie primarily in addressing these kinds of questions::

• Why do people form groups?
• Why in particular do national and ethnic identities seem to be so powerful?
  
• Why do group memberships so often lead to hostility and violence? 
  
• What can we do to intervene effectively in conflicts, both in our own lives and in larger contexts?
  

Much of my research in the past dealt with Russian and American national identity.  More recently, I have studied Sri Lanka; Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Nagorno-Karabakh; and Fiji.  My book The Psychology of Nationalism sets forth some of my main research findings.  I am now engaged in conflict resolution activity closer to home, in the Meadville community and the surrounding area.
