St. Martin Umzug
The Catholic feast day of Saint Martin has a special meaning for the people of Cologne. Children craft their own lanters, and then participate in St. Martin's Day parades. In the evenings, the children parade through the streets of the city with their lanters, caroling and receiving special sweets for the occasion. I joined in on such a parade in my neighborhood last monday evening, and followed a person on horseback, who was dressed as St. Martin, with the other children.
