Great Expectations

All of us, I believe, would like to return with a better sense of the language that we are studying. In the grand scheme of things, however, I think that the study abroad experience is about more than improving oneself academically. I want to return to the United States with a renewed sense of who I am. Through my experiences here, I will be more aware of the fact that I am able to step outside of my comfort zone and face a bit of awkwardness so long as I know something great will come out of it. If one steps outside of his or her comfort zone often enough, I believe that he or she might be capable of doing greater things than the person who chooses not to go beyond what he or she knows. The study abroad experience offers several opportunities to make this happen.

In addition to that, I would like to return with a realization of how lucky I am to have family and friends who will support me whether there is a six hour time difference between us or not. The first few weeks abroad might have been impossible for me had I not had the support of those I love.

It is also important that I return with a greater awareness of the world around me. Often times Americans live within their own little “bubble” and don’t seek anything outside of it. Being in Europe, one of the continents more closely related to the US, has shown me how differently people live outside of our bubble. If I am aware of these differences, I can only imagine how those studying in places like Africa must feel. In opening my mind to these differences, however, I expect to return to the US with a better knowledge of the world around me and an appreciation for my life in America.
