Play Gator Girl

We've read parts of Pink Think and "A Day Without Feminism." We've begun to talk about the ways in which women's lives were different before the rise of second wave feminism.

It might be interesting to look at a day without feminism on a more local and personal level. Specifically, what constraints, if any, would a female student at Allegheny College have experienced before the rise of the Women's Liberation Movement?

We have two documents from the College archives that will begin to answer that question for us.

Although reading these regulations can be instructive, spending a few days internalizing them and trying to live as a 1962 or 1969 Allegheny woman will not only be instructive but will give you the chance to win swell prizes. Okay, the prizes might not be so swell, but think of the adulation and envy of your peers.

Here are the Rules

  1. In class you were assigned to either 1962 or 1969, read the document for your corresponding year very closely.
  2. From 8:00 am Friday, January 26th, through midnight Monday, January 29th, try to follow your assigned set of rules.
  3. Due to the fact that life has changed significantly in the last 40 years, you are not expected achieve 100% conformity.
  4. Find a balance that works for you, but do keep the rules always in mind because ...
  5. In class on Tuesday, January 30th, we will choose teams to play Gator Girl.
  6. Each team will be asked questions about the rules and regulations (for their assigned year) governing Allegheny women.
  7. The winners will be deemed ladies and win the respect and admiration of society.

Remember: We meet in Murray 117 on January 30th.
