Growing Hearts, Growing Minds is a student outreach organization whose goals are public diplomacy and global citizenship. Our goal is to enhance the image of Americans abroad through student ambassadors from Allegheny College's campus who are willing to participate in study tours to and community-building efforts in India. In promoting a working partnership between need-based communities in India and students on Allegheny's campus, we are encouraging a reciprocal model of empowerment – one in which we learn from the communities we support.
Growing Hearts, Growing Minds works to maintain a legacy project to develop social and economic sustainability undertakings within partner villages that support child and adult literacy projects, schemes run by the local women's and artisans' cooperatives, ecological and medical endeavors that benefit public and community health, and technology that enables information sharing and the creation of community leadership networks.
With this, our objectives areto facilitate self-empowerment within our community partners and to create collaboration opportunities for members to learn how to engage in public diplomacy and community-building practices through intercultural dialogue, rather than by imposing a pre-determined model of development.
Growing Hearts, Growing Minds works in conjunction with Allegheny College's summer Experiential Learning Study Tours to India to enable students to work on projects that are connected with our organization's mission statement and goals. In addition, Growing Hearts, Growing Minds continues fundraising efforts in sustaining ongoing projects during the gap between successive Experiential Study Tours to India .
