APL Assignment 2.

FS101, All the News that’s Fit to Print

Professor Eric Pallant

This assignment is intended to assist you in identifying your academic goals for the years ahead. It will be included in your Academic Planning Portfolio (APP). The APP is a collection of documents in which you will explore your academic and career options, and develop a curriculum that will meet your personal goals as well as the College's graduation requirements. It is also a planning tool for developing your schedule in the semesters ahead, and it will follow you to your new advisor when you declare your major at the end of your sophomore year.

  1. Prepare 2 copies.  One for me to review and return.  One to submit to your file.
  2. Redraft your first APL essay, improving writing and changing content as necessary.  This section, the essay on what you hope to get from your Allegheny education is limited to 500 words.

Questions 3 and 4 are limited to an additional 500 words.

  1. If you listed a major or minor before you came to Allegheny College, or if you are inclined towards a particular course of study now, describe how your thoughts about potential majors and minors have changed. Explain why. If you were to select a major at this point that is different from the one you once indicated on the earlier exercise, what would it be? Why is that major attractive to you? If you aren't prepared to state a major preference, DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY.
  2. Discuss what you have enjoyed studying at Allegheny and what you have not enjoyed. Explain why you responded as you did. Try to stick to the subject matter and the methods of inquiry in your courses rather than the dynamics of your particular class or professor. This latter request might be hard to honor, but try.

This section is limited to 250 words.

  1. On a separate page, identify three CO-curricular or extra-curricular activities or programs that you would like to participate in during your time at Allegheny. This can include intercollegiate athletics, student government, student newspaper, community service, interest clubs (Amnesty International, ABC, A5), a study abroad program, an ACCEL program, a greek organization, etc. Discuss why you would like to be involved in this activity or program. Does it relate to your course of study? Do you consider it a resume builder or are you involved because you are passionate about the activity? How does it help to "round out" your Allegheny education?
  2. Finally, prepare a list of four courses you intent to take next semester, four alternate courses, if you don’t get into your fist choices, and four courses you intend to take in the fall semester of your sophomore year.
