Riddle Answer: Point A is the North Pole on the surface of a sphere! Thus, this coordinate system is not on a plane, and this is an example where planar geometry does not apply (we’ll stick with planes for the rest of semester). The solution to the second part of the riddle is that current models predict an ice-free summer in the Arctic by the year 2030 (see this article; lots of interesting data at the National Snow and Ice Data Center); this would be possibly the first ice-free Arctic in some 40 million years (see this article)
