Tentative Schedule

1/21  Intro to course

1/26  Discuss 8-Hour Drawings mindfulness exercise. Woodshop Tour and Demos of Proper Tool Use.  Opening of 8-Hour Drawings - gallery talk with Kirk Mangus,   Lynn Cox and Beatriz Arnillas; 7:30 -8:30 pm art galleries (required)

1/28  Finish woodshop tour and demo (practice time if possible). Discuss xerox handout on 3D form organization / composition. Slides and (possibly) Video(s)

2/2  Critique first project - 8-Hour Sculpture. Distribute and discuss next problem - Object transformations (assignment sheet will be given)

2/4  Look at object possibilities: bring 3 - 5 objects  with you for discussion. Look for complex objects that offer interesting possibilities for   transformation including: issues of meaning (what does the object   suggest / evoke); abstraction (scale, form, shape, physical   relationship, massive to planar, etc); repetition (what happens if the   object is repeated and coalesces as a grouping?).  Slides and videos of relevant artists

2/9   Work and other stuff

2/11  Critique of tar paper object transformations

2/16  Intro to mold making and casting - moldmaking demo.  Distribute / discuss casting assignment . Work time for molds

2/18  Demos of casting.  Work time for molds

2/23  Intro next project: Carving - Form Abstraction.  Molds due (your molds will need to cure for a week or two, so we will move on to the next unit and then return to the molds and the casting portion of the problem in a week)

2/25 demo casting and slides for abstraction/carving project

3/2 Select stones.  Work time (on molds or models for stone, your choice as works best for you).  Reminder: Opening reception in art gallery: Jennifer Pepper Drawings and Sculpture; Stephen Lawson Time-based Photo; and Les Leveque Video Installation. Lecture by Stephen Lawson at 7:30 in A104......required!

3/4 research presentations in conjunction with critiques of casting projects

3/9 research presentations in conjunction with critiques of casting projects

3/11 critique of models for abstraction/carving and demo carving...hand out tools. Stones must be paid for (in art store) and tool deposit is due!
