Art 110:

Survey of Art History I

Course Description

This course will trace the major developments in the history of Western art from the earliest times to the Renaissance period of the fifteenth century. We will also examine briefly a few significant moments in non-western areas, including India, China and the Americas before 1492. As we analyze the most important monuments of these periods, we will focus on the various cultural factors that determine the uses and appearance of art at different times. The material will be presented chronologically, in lecture format, according to the tentative daily schedule.

You are responsible for understanding all of the material presented in class and in the text. For your convenience in studying, images will be placed online, in a password-protected area of the class website. You should be able to identify and discuss in some detail all the works illustrated in the text or in the available study images. The grade will be based on your performance on shorter assignments, exams and class participation A few quizzes will be given in class, building up to the first midterm exam.

As a study aid, there will also be quizzes posted on the computer. The first quiz is required. All subsequent quizzes will be optional. Completion of the optional quizzes will contribute toward the participation grade.
