Just a Bump in the Beltway: Left Behind

We are a group of Allegheny College students who would like to educate you about No Child Left Behind (NCLB). We would like to show you exactly what NCLB is, how it really can leave children behind, and how its negative effects can impact children in America today.

We are making this website as a part of an activism project for our class, Women's Studies 100: Introduction to Women's Studies. The people most affected by NCLB, besides the students themselves, are the teachers and parents of American students. Most often, these two groups are comprised of women.

In addition, the impoverished are affected by NCLB. Children in schools that are classified as "failing" by NCLB's standards now have the choice to switch schools, or even districts, if they so desire. Of course, everyone would like their child to be in a passing school where their academic achievement can grow. Unfortunately, this could mean that if their child were to be injured or have to stay after school, an impoverished parent may not be able to provide transportation to pick up their child.

Because of this law, teachers cannot teach certain curriculums, such as art, music, history, etc. Teachers now have to focus their teaching on math, reading, and science. This is the information on that the government requires students to know, and their students need to pass the NCLB tests. Apparently, the government now decides that students do not need to have knowledge of the arts, and students that are interested in such fields are being left behind because of NCLB's regulations.

Our main goal is to make parents, teachers, administrators, and even students aware of NCLB and the changes and effects that it can cause. We hope to show you that although NCLB may sound like a great idea, it is not all that it is cracked up to be. In reality, some of America's brightest and most talented students are being left behind because of this law.
