For information about what constitutes a major or minor in WS, consult the College Catalogue, also available online.

BEWARE OF COURSE PREREQUISITES!

A few Women's Studies majors and minors have learned it the hard way: WS courses may have pre-requisites that are very necessary for successful completion of the class. Women's Studies prides itself on being inter- and multi-disciplinary, but the breadth of our program comes at a certain cost. Many departmental courses that focus on gender are upper-level offerings that require students to have experience in that department. The pre-requisites may not be listed in the computer or on the WS guide, either. Sometimes WS students are given special permission to enter a class, presumably because they are already knowledgeable about history and theory of women. But WS students still need to work to bring themselves up to speed in different disciplines. Tough? Sure. But meeting these challenges is part of what makes a Women's Studies major or minor so valuable.

Students who find themselves in a class for which they're not prepared should admit it early and consult the professor for help. Professors teaching in the Women's Studies program have usually agreed to accomodate WS students wherever possible.

Also note that the Women's Studies courses themselves are designed in a sequence. Although we try to be flexible, WS 200 requires that you have already taken WS 100, and the junior seminar WS 580 has a prerequisite of both WS 100 and 200.
