The Allegheny Outing Club has a long and valued tradition on the Allegheny campus. According to Brigham Young University's Dave Webb, the Allegheny Outing Club is one of the oldest outing clubs still in operation in the United States. The Tingley Biology Club founded in 1913 and the all women Hiking Club merged to form the Allegheny Outing Club in 1928. Organized by the Physical Director, Miss Cora LeRoy, the AOC was initially a club for women only. Miss LeRoy was also a founding member of the Syracuse Outing Club. In 1935, the AOC evolved to become a co-ed organization that served the purposes of providing organized outdoor activities and volunteers to oversee and maintain Bousson Woods, a 238 acre wooded area incorporating virgin timber, beaver pond, and a small lake.
Today, the Allegheny College Outing Club provides the college community with a number of outdoor recreation activities. Although Bousson Woods has come under the management of the Allegheny Environmental Services program, the AOC can still be found hiking, backpacking, canoeing, rafting, caving, and much more in the abundant natural resources of Northwest Pennsylvania. In addition, the AOC manages an equipment rental operation that provides the necessities to get out on your own and enjoy the surrounding area.
