Otter Creek is known throughout West Virginia as one of the most scenic places to backpack. A group of 10 hikers made the journey to the area to enjoy their Spring Break in the outdoors. After negotiating the hairpin turns on the Forest Road that led to Gladys Fork, the starting point, the van was parked and the hike began. Though the weather was mostly sunny, the thermometer barely crept to 40 degrees on the warmest day of the trek, and the mornings greeted the campers with frozen Nalgeneâ??s and numb hands. The most difficult part of the hike came during the â??mildâ?? uphill that climbed over 500 feet in about a mile and a half, proving that even guidebooks can understate difficulty. But, with the uphill managed, the hikers continued on to the van, and back to campus after a brief stop for a delicious dollar menu dinner at McDonaldâ??s.
