Wilderness First Aid Training

On Friday, March 2, 2007 four Allegheny Outing Club Trip Leaders left for a two-day intensive course in wilderness first aid. The course was held at Crooked Creek Environmental Learning Center. The students returned to campus with a new respect for the outdoors a better understanding of extreme conditions that may occur on an excursion. The leaders plan on reviewing this course every two years, which is required to meet wilderness first aid guidelines.

Vines Farm Service Project

The Allegheny Outing Club takes onā?¦a farm? Thatā??s right, on Sunday October 22, 2006 nine students were introduced to sustainable farming practices on the land of David and Rebecca Vines, whose playfully named farm ā??Fresh From the Vinesā??, produces dozens of varieties or fruits and vegetables year-round. The groupsā?? task was to plant six beds of garlic before the rain fell, which they attacked with youthful energy. In addition to learning the finer methods of garlic planting, the students were introduced to high tunnels (similar to a greenhouse with no external energy source), organic farming and incredibly delicious food prepared by Rebecca Vines. Covered in mud and sprinkled with rain the participants gathered in what will soon be a certified kitchen to enjoy chips with homemade salsa, fresh-baked oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and oven fries made with gold, red, blue and sweet potatoes that the participants helped prepare. It was a delicious success!
