Dimensions PicnicDimensions

Dimensions, Allegheny's primary mathematics club and student chapter of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), organizes social events, trips to professional conferences, weekly discussion groups. Club members also gather to share career and graduate school information. For more information, visit the Dimensions Home Page.

Pi Mu Epsilon

The Pennsylvania Sigma Chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, an honorary mathematics society, completed its second full year of existence in 96-97. This year's officers were Jennifer Timcho ('97), Berent Eskikaya ('97), Jennifer Johnson ('97), and Maria Fire ('97). Seven students and one professor were inducted during a dinner ceremony in the fall of 1996.

Honors and Prizes

Outstanding academic achievement by majors is recognized through three prizes awarded annually by the department's faculty. These are the Frederick H. Steen Prize and the Doyle Prize for seniors, and the Outstanding Junior Major Prize.

Special Lectures

One lecture/seminar series by a nationally-known mathematician is offered each year. Students have many opportunities for informal interaction with lecturers such as the editor of the American Mathematical Monthly, the president of the American Mathematical Society, and the president of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
