This program will allow you to record your voice digitally and then export in either an uncompressed format (.wav) or a compressed format (.mp3).

If you are uploading recordings to your personal ftp site at Allegheny or attaching the files to an email message to your Professor, you should always choose .mp3 format.

 
Quick Guide to Audacity
 

To record your voice, follow these steps:

  1. Sign out a headset from the LLC counter that has both earphones and a microphone.

  2. Plug the connection cords for both earphone and microphone in the appropriate sockets in the front of the computer (earphone to the far right, microphone in the middle)

  3. Double-click the speaker icon on the far right of the Task bar to open the Volume Control. Click "Options" from the menu and then select "Properties." Click the "Recording" radio button. Close this dialog window and check to be sure the microphone selection box is checked. Close the Volume Control.

  4. Launch Audacity from the Start/Programs menu.

  5. The following buttons control the recording:

    Record
    Stop Recording
    Play

  6. To delete passages from your recording, click at the point you want to delete and, holding down the mousebutton, drag just before the point you want to preserve. Release the mouse button and click "Edit" from the menu and then "Cut."

  7. To save your recording, click "File" from the menu and select "Export as Mp3. Be sure you save the file to the My Documents folder.


  8. Once saved, you can move the file to a floppy drive, ftp it, or email it to a recipient.

    To check the size of the file first, click My Documents from the Desktop and navigate to the folder to which you saved your recordiing. Right click on the recording file and choose "Properties" from the popup menu. Files over 1MB (1000KB) should only be transferred via ftp or disk.
