Where?
Spain's fourth largest city, Seville is situated on the banks of the Guadalquivir River and enjoys a temperate climate and rich cultural life. Under Roman rule, Seville became a great port in 205 B.C. Later, Columbus was received here when he returned from his voyage to the new World, and it was from Seville that Magellan set sail around the globe. The Seville Cathedral, built in the 1400s, is possibly the most impressive Gothic cathedral in the Christian world. Seville is also known for its Moorish palaces, Renaissance gardens, paintings, statues, and world-famous ceramic tiles. In addition, the city's Museum of Fine Arts has one of the finest collections in Spain. An extensive public transportation system links the various neighborhoods and attractions.
Academic Program
The Center for Cross-Cultural Study is housed in two connected Sevillian mansions in the heart of the city's commercial and social center. The average number of American students studying Spanish each semester is about 120, and the program in English language study hosts about 200 Spanish students during the academic year. The Center promotes interaction of Spanish and American students by organizing social events and activities, such as outings to the theater, festivals, carnivals, art exhibits, concerts, video presentations, and parties. Students may also participate in intercambios (conversation exchanges) with one or more of the Center's Spanish students, thus encouraging people to develop friendships with Spanish students.
