The Duke Marine Lab is situated on Pivers Island, which lies across the channel from the town of Beaufort, NC, and is accessible by car. As part of the sounds, estuaries, and islands that comprise the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the area is rich in flora and fauna of both temperate and tropical environments. In the Beaufort-Morehead City area are six other laboratories, accounting for a sizeable population of marine scientists.

The programs of study offered at the Duke Marine Lab serve undergraduate majors in natural sciences, or environmental sciences and policy. The programs emphasize small classes, independent research and integrated classroom, laboratory, and field research. Students have daily access to the natural marine environment, modern scientific equipment, and to specialized faculty who represent the disciplines of oceanography, marine biology, marine biomedicine, marine biotechnology, and coastal marine policy and management.

Students should have a 3.0 GPA in order to study at the Duke Marine Lab and must have completed introductory courses in biology, chemistry and math at Allegheny. Applicants must be approved by Professor Scott Wissinger (scott.wissinger@allegheny.edu) in order to participate.

Allegheny students must be first approved to study off-campus before applying to their chosen program. Deadlines to submit the approval packet are February 20 for the fall program and September 20 for the for the spring program. Approval packets will be reviewed immediately following the appropriate semester deadline. The Marine Laboratory is a small campus that includes student dormitories, classroom laboratories, research buildings, and various other facilities. Students enrolled in this program are housed in dormitories at Beaufort. Students share three meals a day at the island's Dining Hall with fellow students, faculty and staff and have access to the Student Center, island common areas, computer labs and library facilities.

Students are charged Allegheny tuition, a $300 off-campus study fee, room, and board. Allegheny financial aid, except work/study, is applied toward the program. Extra costs include Duke health insurance (about $500), round-trip transportation to North Carolina and personal expenses.
