Designated by the UN as a World Cultural Heritage site, Querétaro is one of Mexico's most impressive colonial cities. At the same time, it is a modern commercial center, located on a major NAFTA trade route. A city with a rich historical past, Querétaro played an important role in Mexico's independence movement; it was here that the forces of Benito Juarez defeated Maximillian and the Constitution of 1917 was written. Querétaro is only 200 kilometers north of Mexico City and only 350 kilometers east of Guadalajara. Students are able to travel easily to archeological sites, such as the pyramids of Teotihuacan, and the coastal city of Mazatlan.
Querétaro is a very clean city and is considered to be one of the safest in Mexico, both for its lack of crime and because it lies outside the earthquake zone. |

ITESM is a 26-campus university system founded in 1943. The Querétaro campus dates from 1975. Currently enrolling a student body of 5,000 students in 17 majors, it has a growing International Programs department for visiting international students. Almost every major sponsors a national conference once a year, and each has a professional organization for students. Allegheny students will take language and area studies courses at the "International Programs" unit at the university. The areas studies courses are taught in Spanish, although a few are also offered in English (see reverse). Students with the appropriate language level can take regular university courses. Internships are available.

There are more than 60 specialized computer labs, and each student receives a free, account with registration. The library, the largest in the central region, provides for both traditional and electronic research. A new conference center and cafeteria opened in the fall of 1997, and a new gymnasium opened in the spring of 1998. The campus health center is staffed by both physicians and paramedics. Campus Querétaro has many student organizations, both professional and social, and a wide variety of workshops and other activities, such as creative writing, drama, folk dance, painting, chorus, guitar, modern dance, photography, student publications, etc.
Allegheny students will live with families who have worked with the International Programs Office at Querétaro for many years. Transportation within the city is both economical and easy. |
