Where?
To the top
The University of Haifa is located atop Mt. Carmel, bordering the Carmel National Park, in the port city of Haifa. The city is beautiful and dynamic, a major center for Israeli high tech and export industries and the cultural capital of northern Israel. Haifa has an extraordinary cosmopolitan population of Jews, Arabs and Druze living in harmony to make the city and the university very special places in which to live and study.
The Program
To the top
The University of Haifa is an internationally acclaimed institution of higher education and research with over 12,500 enrolled students and a faculty drawn from all over the world. Allegheny students will normally enroll in the Department of Overseas Studies, which offers courses in most of the fields taught at the University. Students can enroll in regular university courses if they are offered in English or if they demonstrate the requisite Hebrew proficiency.
Eligibility
To the top
This program is open to all second semester sophomores in any major. A 2.5 GPA is required.
Application Process
To the top
Allegheny students must first be approved to study off-campus before applying to their chosen program. Deadlines to submit the approval packet are March 1 for the fall program and September 20 for the spring program. Approval packets will be reviewed immediately following the appropriate semester deadline. Stop by Reis Hall to pickup the guidelines or access the information on the web at www.alleg.edu/accel/offcampus/app.html.
Student Life
To the top
University sponsored tours offer students a view of Israel in its entire natural beauty and cultural interest. These trips include special activities for each location such as canoeing on the Jordan River, mountain climbing, swimming in a desert oasis, visits to a Bedouin camp, Druze villages and archaeological sites. There is also a special series of cultural enrichment lectures and discussion meetings on religious, political and social issues. In addition, two or three weekend seminars are held off-campus in different educational retreats throughout the country.
The University of Haifa Students Association organizes on campus activities such as concerts featuring major Israeli pop stars, weekly dancing and discos, a film series sponsored by the campus Hillel Foundation and numerous sports activities.

All students live in the University dormitory. The dorms are divided into suites of three doubles, a kitchen, a large bathroom and a common room. There is no meal plan at the University, so students can cook in their suite kitchens. There are university-subsidized cafeterias on campus serving a variety of meals at very reasonable prices.
