Where?
With an overall population of 85,000, Tübingen is a relatively small town but is at the same time a microcosm of science and a center of scholars, poets and publishers. It is an old city, yet dominated by young people as hardly any other. The opportunities for cultural and artistic experiences are many and there are many religious, spiritual and other special emphasis groups and organizations active in the city as well. While the majority of the liberal arts departments and institutions of the University are located in the old part of Tübingen, a modern Science Center was built over twenty years ago on the hills overlooking the town.

The Program
The University of Tübingen offers courses in a wide spectrum of disciplines, from humanities and social sciences to the natural sciences.

Allegheny students will begin their program with a 6-week intensive language and culture course (around Sept 1 - Oct 15 for academic year students; around Mar 1 - Apr 15 for spring semester students). The fall (Winter) semester in Germany begins toward the end of October and lasts until February. There is a one-month exam session and then a one month break. The spring semester (Sommer) begins toward the end of April and lasts until late July.

Students may enroll in courses for international students, which include language and area studies courses taught in German. More information regarding the courses offered to international students can be located at: http://www.uni-tuebingen.de/intrel/exchange.html. The schedule of university classes (Vorlesungsverzeichnis) is available just before the beginning of the semester. An excellent overview of the German university system is available at: http://www.uni-tuebingen.de/intrel/englisch/enguide.html , under "study information" and "admission and registration".

Eligibility
Students must have 4 semesters of college-level German at a B level, or the equivalent. Students must be nominated by the German Section and the International Office in order to participate in the exchange.

Student Life
The University's four student restaurants and its six cafeterias offer inexpensive meals, and are popular meeting places for students and faculty. There are several cinemas in Tübingen offering an excellent selection of European and American films, while student halls of residence and the University Clubhaus also have showings of films. There are two theatres in Tübingen featuring both student and professional talent in a wide variety of stage productions.

Sports activities and events are organized by the University's Sport Institute, which offers a wide range of opportunities from aerobics and weightlifting to karate and cross-country cycling. Tübingen is near good ski-country and outings are regularly arranged by various groups. The most popular sports activities are hiking and cycling in the forested hills around Tübingen.

Application Process
Allegheny students must first be approved to study off-campus before applying to their chosen program. Deadlines to submit the approval packet are February 20 for the fall program and September 20 for the spring program. Approval packets will be reviewed immediately following the appropriate semester deadline. Stop by Reis Hall to pickup the guidelines or access the information on the web at http://www.allegheny.edu/accel/international/studies/guidelines.php.

Cost
Students are charged Allegheny tuition and a $300 off-campus fee; Allegheny financial aid, except workstudy, is applied to program costs. Allegheny will pay for tuition and room for the required pre-semester intensive course which begins in September or March, 6 weeks prior to the beginning of the regular German semester in mid-October, or mid-April. Allegheny will also cover the matriculation fee for the semester. Students will pay for room during the regular semester and for meals during their entire stay. Students will have approximately $680 taken off their Allegheny charges in order to pay for certain costs on-site. Additional costs include required German student insurance, international airfare, and personal expenses (including passport, any costs related to obtaining a German residence permit once on-site, and local transportation).
