COURSES TAUGHT IN GERMAN

German Language and Culture I and II
A double course devoted to the intensive study and practice of the German language within the context of contemporary German life. Upon arrival in Cologne, the student will be placed into one of two levels:

  • German 235/245 German Language and Culture I and II: Intermediate
    An intensive review of basic structural patterns to improve German language skills, emphasizing oral communication. To provide the study of language a cultural context, this course will utilize authentic German texts and a variety of field trip opportunities. (6 credits)
  • German 255/265 German Language and Culture I and II: Advanced
    An intensive study of advanced aspects of the German language, emphasizing oral communication. Various types of exercises and compositions, in addition to field trips and excursions, will be used to practice the language within the context of the life and culture of Germany today. (6 credits)

German 285 German Short Fiction
An introduction to short literary texts in German by 20th-century authors and to the historical, political, and cultural background of the period. The course is designed to build vocabulary, increase reading skills and reinforce grammatical and communicative structures. (4 credits)

German 345 Special Topics in German Literature
A use of literary and cultural texts to enrich cultural knowledge, to increase vocabulary, reinforce grammatical and communicative structures, and to introduce methods of textual analysis. Based on the theater and film program offered in Cologne, several plays and films are selected. (4 credits)

COURSES TAUGHT IN ENGLISH

Poli Sci 353 The Political System of Germany

An introduction to the political system of Germany, with emphasis on actual, daily political events and the current political climate in Germany. Both foreign and domestic issues will be discussed, including topics such as East/West relations, disarmament, unification, the environment, and Neo-Nazism. Class time is divided between lecture and discussion of outside readings. (4 credits)

History 217 History of Modern Germany

An introduction to the historical, political, social and intellectual background of modern Germany. Typical discussion topics include the Congress of Vienna, the 1848 revolution, the first unification of 1871, the Weimar Republic, National Socialism, and the division of Germany after World War II. Special attention will be paid to the unification process since 1989 and Germany's role in international politics. (4 credits)

Art 236 German Art From the Middle Ages to Today

A survey of German Art from the Middle Ages to the present. Emphasis will be placed on the social, political, and religious contexts which contributed to the creation of the art works. Special use will be made of the galleries, museums, and the annual Kunstmesse in Cologne to teach the course and to introduce some aspects of the art market. (4 credits)
