Where?
Located on the Rhine River, Cologne is an ideal site for study in Germany. It is rich in art and culture, and although its history reaches back to Roman times, it is a modern and vibrant center. Known as the broadcast center of Germany, Cologne is also one of the country's most cosmopolitan cities, with large ethnic neighborhoods and international arts festivals.

Academic Program
The Cologne program is unique, as it is suitable for students with only one year of German language study, offering courses in both German and English. In addition, it is designed to meet the needs of students with diverse disciplinary interests and is ideal for students with a major or minor in International Studies, Political Science, History or German. Every student must take two language courses. Courses in art history, political science and history are taught in English. Courses are taught Monday - Thursday, leaving Fridays as excursion days with visits outside and within Cologne (e.g. to the Cathedral and the City Museum).

One of the program's highlights has been the one-week stay in Berlin, which gives students insights into the state of unification and a look at the capital. Academic workshops and excursions are scheduled to take full advantage of this truly cosmopolitan city.

Eligibility
The program is open to Allegheny students who have achieved sophomore status, have completed a minimum of one year of college German and are in good academic standing. A minimum GPA of 2.5 is strongly suggested. Permission of the Head of the German Section of the Modern Languages Department is required.

Application Process
Allegheny students will then be approved by the German department to study in Cologne. The department deadline for applications is February 5. Students must then be approved by Allegheny to study off campus. The deadline to submit the approval packet to the International Office is February 20. Approval packets will be reviewed immediately following the appropriate semester deadline. Stop by Reis Hall to pickup the guidelines or access the information at http://www.allegheny.edu/accel/international/studies/guidelines.php.

Student Life
A very successful feature of the program has been the home stay program. Students live in private homes, where they can hear and speak German and are often invited to participate in the family's activities. In some cases, the friendship with the family that develops in Cologne lasts for a long time after the student's return to the U.S.

Students participating in the program can take advantage of the facilities at the Universität Köln. They can choose from over 30 sports and other activities, such as yoga and Tai Chi, allowing them to meet and interact with German and other international students.

Costs
Students are charged Allegheny tuition, fees (including $300 off-campus fee), room and board, and Allegheny financial aid, except workstudy, is applied to program costs. INCLUDED are all instructional costs, housing, meals, excursions, tram tickets in Cologne, international health insurance, and books. Personal expenses are not included. Reimbursement for airfare is regularly offered by the Max Kade Foundation (see Ms. Roz Macken (rmacken@allegheny.edu) in the Modern Languages Department for more information).
