Oxford is a historic city built entirely around its famous campus, located an hour north of London by train. The University itself comprises 36 colleges; the oldest, University College, was founded in 1249, and the youngest, St. Catherine's, was founded in 1963. Founded in 1928, St. Peter's College is at the center of the University and close to all of the University's libraries and laboratories. The college buildings date from the late 1700s to modern day structures.

Oxford University is made up of faculties and colleges. Faculties (departments) set the syllabus for all subjects and are responsible for the provision of lectures, classes and examinations. Colleges are usually the focus of students' academic and social life, as it is the tutors (university professors) of each College who primarily direct students' academic work, and the Colleges provide accommodations and social facilities. St. Peter's itself is small, and the informal interaction of the students with the tutors provides a stimulating and flexible environment.
Visiting students at St. Peter's follow the same academic structure as the other Oxford undergraduates. The academic year is composed of three ten-week terms: Michaelmas (October to mid-December), Hilary (late January to mid-March) and Trinity (late April to late June). During each term, students study one or two subjects and learn through tutorials, subject groups and lectures. Tutorials are weekly meetings between one or two students and a tutor where they discuss assignments related to the course. Subject groups consist of all the students studying a particular course in a given year, who are brought together for discussion. The emphasis is on independent study and research, supplemented by seminars and lectures. St. Peter's accepts students who wish to study Archaeology and Anthropology; Biochemistry; Biological Sciences; Chemistry; Computer Science; Earth Sciences; Economics; Engineering Science; English; Geography; (Modern) History; Law; Management; Mathematics; Medicine; Modern Languages (French, German, Modern Greek, Italian, Russian); Music; Philosophy; Physics; Physiology; Politics; Theology. |

Application Process
|

|
The application process for Oxford does not follow the same procedure as other semester or yearlong programs. Interested students must submit the Oxford approval packet by September 20 of the sophomore year. The approval packet consists of a completed interest form, a letter of recommendation from the student's academic advisor approving the year abroad, a letter of recommendation from an Allegheny professor from whom the student has taken a course, a resume, and unofficial transcripts. The forms are available in the International Office or on-line at http://www.allegheny.edu/accel/international/studies/guidelines.php. Approval packets will be reviewed by the Dean's Selection Committee, students will be interviewed, and up to two students will be selected. Selected students will then complete the Oxford application packet, which is due on the last day of the fall semester. Allegheny will send the application packet to Oxford once the fall grades are posted. Nominated students should receive a response from Oxford by the end of January.

As a large university, Oxford provides a variety of social activities for students as well as many traditional, formal affairs. Student life, when not focused on projects and research, is easily filled by concerts and theatre performances and a wide range of sports, music and drama clubs sponsored by St. Peter's. St. Peter's two common rooms often host activities planned by student committees.
Housing is provided within the College, and meals in the College's dining hall are included in the program. St. Peter's College is located in the center of Oxford, close to bus and train stations for easy connections throughout England. London is one hour away by train or bus, with easy connections to major airports. |

Students are charged Allegheny tuition, room and board, and a $300 off-campus fee. Allegheny aid, except work-study, is applied to program costs. The Oxford program fee covers tuition and fees at St. Peter's; room and board expenses throughout the terms; room during the breaks; membership in a student common room; access to the College library and sports facilities. Students are covered by the British National Health Service (NHS) for health care (dental care is not covered). Additional costs include international airfare, passport, local transportation, meals not covered during breaks, personal expenses and the cost of an academic gown, which is needed for College functions and formal occasions.
